062
Tonight I decided to do a quick digital sketch of “the Rookie” from Halo 3 ODST.
It’s been where a lot of my spare time has been going these days so it seems appropriate.
I’ve also found that with the digital method I’m becoming more inclined to throw color into the images. I can’t really figure out why. I kind of assume it’s to cover up a lot of the flaws that I see in the line art.

060
It seems strange to return to basics but that’s where I found myself tonight with the wacom tablet.
Learning to be expressive and at that moment learning patience. It will take time.
This is a new media, for me, and in many ways it’s like learning to draw all over again. So I went back to where you start with learning to draw people, structure.
Normally this sort of thing would have taken me 30 seconds with a pencil and a piece of crap copy paper but it took me probably 10 minutes with a tablet.
I know anatomy back and forth, I’ve been studying it for more years than I can remember but now it seems different when you add the difficulty of drawing on a surface while you look at another. It’s feels like a perverted version of the exercises in figure drawing where you drew the model without looking at the paper, it looks about that good too.
But despite the negativity stated above I’m excited, it’s fun to learn something that feels new yet; familiar at the same time.

delay
I tried to avoid it, but I’ve had to delay the sketch-a-day.
Last Thursday my Grandpa Dale took ill and after a long few days of hanging in there he passed away this morning.
It’s has meant time with family I don’t often see and now all of the usual things that go along with the death of a family member.
I have lots of good memories of fishing with him in the Gulf of Mexico and family trips that we spent with my grand parents at their place in the Florida Keys.
But amidst the commotion of the weekend and also dealing with the fact that my little brother sat in Chicago’s lovely O’Hare airport for about 13 hours due to missing his connection thanks to a weather delay here in Madison, I did manage to get the 5th page of Tex drawn and the 6th is about half way there.

So I’ll be back to sketching next week and hopefully be a little more diligent than I have been recently.
Until then.

055
So the 365 sketch gets sidetracked about every weekend and I know I’m at least 3 if not 5 sketches behind.
It gets lost to things like Shitty Barn Parties in Spring Green with my friends and other adventures into the world.
It also gets lost to doing things like this

But I got back on track tonight with this sketch.

Trying some multiple character composition as well as working with more characters that I’ve never drawn.
I don’t know why but I prefer Invisible Woman with the short hair, despite the fact that I myself prefer women with long hair. Maybe it seems more action oriented. I also have no idea if I drew either Invisible Woman or Dr. Doom’s costumes correctly. I was just going on what was in my head rather than slowing down to look up reference for them on the internet. If nothing the general feel of the characters I think is right.
But it was fun to draw and that’s what counts here. I like the ominous Doom who is obviously right behind her. I even made the decision late in the sketch to have him reaching towards her.
Hopefully I’ll try more of these along with more action poses and such. This sketch series needs some fisticuffs and soon.
